Today I am going to tell you how a day at the Shelter looks like.
We have 2 different shifts, the morning one that it's from 7am until 12pm and the afternoon one that it's from 1pm until 6pm (although normally we will finish a bit later in both shifts depending of how well the small children behave when eating hehehe).
I have been normally doing the afternoon shift, so I'll tell you what we do on daily basis using that shift as an example.
We will leave the flat about 30/40 mins earlier and take one of the Peruvian buses, they are very small and kind of funny way of travelling, I'll tell me you more about them in a different post, ok?
Once we get in, we need our photo passes (that small children love! they always check our photos on them) and sign in the visitors book.
The Tias, who are the volunteers who stay at the shelter 24hrs with the children, have divided the children in 2 groups, the small ones (ages 0-4) and the bigger ones (4-11).
The first thing we do is help the small ones (normally 9 of them) finishing eating, we will help them washing up their hands and faces after they have eating and we will bring them to a patio upstairs on the top of the building where they can play with loads of toys, they also have a little wooden house where they can sit down and do some games, build some towers, make some animals with recycling materials, etc... a place where they can develop their learning skills and not only play.
We take them all of them upstairs so the bigger ones and the tias can eat peacefully.
It depends of how many volunteers are at the shelter we might also need to help cleaning the dining room, washing up dishes (that is like a never ending job hehehe) and/or help with the laundry, mainly folding clothes that are already clean and dry.
Some other volunteers will spend the whole afternoon upstairs playing with the small children and helping organising different games so they do some exercise and learn colours and stuff, like animals, shapes, etc...
Others will help the bigger ones with their homework, some times they have to create a poster, or paint some drawings, so it not just maths and writing. It could be fun too.
Around 5pm the small ones will have to had dinner, so we take them all downstairs to the dining room, wash their hands and sit them in their chairs, each day will have different food, so it could be challenging to get some of them to eat properly, but normally they eat very well and always ask for more food.
After dinner we will wash them again and other volunteers and tias will change their nappies and put them into bed with their pyjamas, then it's normally 6pm and the shift is over.
Obviously some days we will change the routine, we might take the children to the park, or organise some party so they can dance, or the bigger ones will help with the cleaning or baking cakes... the tias try to make every day a different one.
I hope this gives you an idea of how a day looks like at the Shelter. Below there are some photos of the children with other volunteers and myself! they are so cute! I am going to miss them!

Hoy os voy a contra como es un dia normal en la Casa Hogar.
Tenemos 2 horarios diferentes, uno el de mañana (de 7am a 12pm) y el de la tarde (1pm a 6pm), aunque es muy raro que terminemos a la hora en punto, siempre nos quedamos un poco mas, depende de los traviesos que sean los niños a la hora de comer, jejeje.
Normalmente yo he estado hacienda el turno de tarde, asi que usaré este turno como ejemplo para explicaros.
Salimos del piso donde vivimos unos 30/40 minutos antes de empezar y tomamos uno de los autobuses peruanos, muy pequeños pero son toda una aventura, ya os contaré en otro post.
Una vez llegamos a la Casa Hogar nos ponemos nuestros pases con foto (el cual le encanta a los niños pequeños, les hace gracia ver nuestra foto) y firmamos en el libro de visitas.
Las Tias, que son voluntarias peruanas que están en la casa hogar 24hrs, ha dividido a los niños en 2 grupos, lo pequeños (edad 0-4) y los grandes (edad 4-11).
Lo primero que hacemos es ayudar a los mas pequeñines a terminar de comer, les lavamos las manitas y las caritas y los subimos al patio del la parte de arriba de la casa donde tienen muchos juguetes para jugar, también hay una casita de madera que la usan de aula para que los pequeños hagan sus manualidades y aprendan cositas sentaditos en mesitas, como hacer torres, cantar, hacer animalitos con materiales reciclados... un aula donde se puedan desarrollar y aprender cosas nuevos y no solo jugar.
Llevamos a todos los pequeños arriba, unos 9, asi los grandes, unos 6, y las tias pueden comer con mas calma.
Dependiendo de cuantos voluntarios haya ese dia, podemos ayudar tambien con otras tareas, como lipiar el salon, fregando platos (una tarea que nunca se acaba! jajaja), o doblando la ropita que ya está limpia y seca.
Algunas de las voluntarias pasan toda la tarde con los niños pequeños arriba jugando con ellos, organizando diferentes juegos para que puedan aprender colores, hagan ejercicio, se suelten mas hablando, y cosas asi.
Otros pueden ayudar a os niños grandes con las tareas del colegio, algunas veces tienen que hacer posters o algunos dibujos, asi que tambien puede ser divertido.
Sobre las 5 de la tarde, los pequeñines bajan a cenar, los bajamos y como siempre les lavamos las manitas y los sentamos en sus sillitas, cada dia comen cosas distintas, asi que hay veces que cuesta más que se coman todo, pero por lo general comen muy bien y siempre piden mas comida.
Despues de cenar, se les lava las manitas y las caritas y las voluntarias les cambian los pañales y les acuestan en sus cunitas con sus pijamitas, entonces significa que ya se terminó el dia para nosotros.
Obviamente no todos los dias son iguales, hay dias que les llevamos al parque a que jueguen en los columpios, a la pelota o les hacemos una pequeña fiesta para que bailen y cosas asi. O tambien los mayors ayudan con la limpieza o haciendo tortas. Las tias siempre intentan que cada dia sea un dia diferente.
Espero que con esta explicación os hagais una idea del dia a dia del voluntariado que he hecho aca en la Casa Hogar. Abajo pongo algunas fotos de los niños con otras voluntarias y yo. Son tan lindos! los voy a echar mucho de menos!
